Introduction
Our family has had the pleasure of exploring many waterways together, and we’ve started exploring Florida urban kayaking/paddleboarding. The thought is intriguing; the blend of cityscapes and nature provides a unique experience that can be both exciting and relaxing. Since we are spread throughout the state, I’ve gathered some favorite spots from the web, shared my experience in Fort Myers Beach area below, and plan to explore the other areas and report back on our trips. We would love to hear your thoughts if you’ve paddled these spots, and if you have your own personal favorites to share!
Urban Kayaking – Miami: Biscayne Bay Paddle Board & Kayaks
Miami is a vibrant city known for its beaches and nightlife. But did you know it’s also a fantastic place for kayaking and paddleboarding? Biscayne Bay Paddle Board & Kayaks is a great rental store that caters to families. Their friendly staff will make sure you will have everything needed for a safe and fun day on the water. They even offer guided tours, which are perfect for beginners.

Urban Kayaking – Fort Myers Beach: Kayak Excursions
Renowned as a shelling mecca, Fort Myers Beach owes its reputation to its prime location along the Gulf of Mexico. Beyond its shell-strewn shores, the area is equally celebrated for its breathtaking sunsets and an array of family-friendly activities. Kayak Excursions, strategically situated, offers an ideal starting point for a delightful family adventure. They provide kayak and paddleboard rentals, as well as guided stand-up paddleboard and kayak tours. I recently launched from Kayak Excursions Pelican Bay location where the staff was friendly and helpful to renters and to those who brought their own kayaks as well. The staff reviewed the map with our group navigator, pointing out our route options so we were completely comfortable with our paddle. We chose to enjoy the serene journey through Pelican Bay, interconnected canals, and mangroves, where we saw bald eagles and dolphins!

Urban Kayaking – Tampa: Tampa River Walk Rentals
Next stop, Tampa! Tampa River Walk Rentals is a family-friendly rental store that offers a variety of paddleboards as well as kayaks to suit all ages (5 and older) and skill levels. I’m a big fan of Crescent Kayaks and own their CK1 model; I was excited to see they use these highly stable kayaks, and use models which can accommodate 1 or 2 adults, plus a small child. Paddle on the Hillsborough River with historic sites and the Riverwalk, or on the Hillsborough Bay with mansions and maybe some dolphins!

Urban Kayaking – Jacksonville: All Wet Sports
If you’re in Jacksonville, don’t miss out on All Wet Sports. This rental store has a first come, first serve policy and offers a wide range of canoes, paddleboards, kayaks, and gear. Their private launch provides easy access to the beginner friendly Pottsburg Creek. For the more adventurous, they also offer windsurfing and wakeboarding lessons. Paddling in Jacksonville offers a mix of urban and natural scenery. It’s a great way to spend quality time with the family.
Urban Kayaking – Orlando: The Paddling Center at Shingle Creek
Last but not least, Orlando! The Paddling Center at Shingle Creek is a fantastic place to rent single kayaks, tandem double kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddle boards. They offer guided tours and self-guided rentals as well as lessons. Their staff are knowledgeable and friendly, making sure you have a great experience. They even offer a shuttle service to the launch site, which is a great convenience.
Florida urban kayaking on Shingle Creek is a peaceful experience. The water is calm, making it perfect for families. It’s a great way to unwind, especially after a day at the theme parks – if you have the energy!
